The Valdaostan Red Spotted Cow
The Valdaostan breed, as the other
spotted breeds who lives at the feet
of Mont Blanc, derives probably from
the spotted cattle of Nordern Europe
imported from the Burgundians at the
end of the 5th century.
This is the most spread
autochthonous breed of the western
alps which has perfectly adapted
herself at the geographic and
climate conditions.
His particular features are the
following: red spotted coat, white
head, short, thin and red ears,
white legs, tail and abdominal
region; the horns are light, thin
and yellowish leaning forward and
up. The limbs are short and vigorous
with wide joints and strong houghs
and the shin are short and stable.
The hoofs are tight and made by a
compact horny tissue.
Peculiar breed features
The Valdaostan Red Spotted Cow
is characterized by a strong
locomotor capacity especially on
steep slopes thanks to his strong
limbs, to resistant and hard houghs
and a relatively “light”
constitution ( weigh about 500 kgs).
His particular adaptability to the
hard climate and the resistance at
the most common pathologies allows
the exploitation in those areas
where the more demanding breeds
cannot be reared in a profitable
way. The cows are in general very
fertile, long-lived, sparing and
have a marked attitude towards the
coarse forage.
